Ever wonder why kids these days aren’t as respectable as they were 40 years ago?  Why they don’t have any discipline?  Why it seems as if they have no hope for their future? Be shocked to find out the root causes for society’s failures, why school curriculum is being changed so frequently, and how you can put your children on a solid foundation as we go back even 50 years to see what was tolerated in this country and what wasn’t. We accomplish all of this in three different phases.

 

Phase 1: The World Views

Why is it that the youth of today are never taught absolutes, but instead are being taught to judge situations by feelings rather than by principle?  Warning someone from making bad decisions used to be called “love”, but nowadays “love” has been replaced with modern terms such as  “hate” and “intolerance” while excusing ill behavior under the guise of  “tolerance.”  

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”  Morality governs choice.  If kids do not have a moral structure or conscience, is it any wonder that they behave the way that they do? Another question would be, can we fully blame them for the decisions they make if that is all they have been taught?  Kids need to be held accountable and to respect authority, not the other way around.  In just a few short decades, we have seen a steady eroding of morality through music, internet, and other forms of entertainment and there has simply been nothing done about it.  Does it not seem ironic and wrong that we send students into the real world and tell them to be responsible, when we have not taught them to do so?   Ultimately the responsibility of teaching right vs. wrong has been laid to the feet of the educators. 

 

Phase 2: The Foundation

Daniel Webster said, “Hold on my friends to the Constitution, and to the Republic for which it stands.  Miracles do not cluster and what has happened once in 6000 years may not happen again.  Hold on to the Constitution, for if the American Constitution should fail, there will be anarchy throughout the world.”  To understand this great Republic, you have to know its basis. 

Here is an example:  Have you been hearing the phrase “Separation of Church and State” lately?  You will probably say, “Many times!” It is taught that it is found in the Constitution.  If this were the case, then why are Moses and the Ten Commandments on top of the Supreme Court building?  Why is “In God we Trust” on our currency? And why would men like George Washington say, “Religion and Morality are the essential pillars of civil society”?   Thomas Jefferson wrote the phrase "separation of church and state" in a private letter to the Baptists in Danbury, Connecticut 26 years after the Declaration of Independence was written and 15 years after the Constitution was written, solely to protect religious freedom from government tyranny. 

Men and women all over this country have fought, bled, and died upholding their oath to defend our U.S. Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.  The question is, do you know your Constitution?  If not, then what did they die for?   What is America all about?  What is freedom?  Where does freedom come from?  How are you holding men and women in government accountable?  We cannot expect the youth of today to respect this country when we ourselves do not understand its principles.  

It is our right and our duty as Citizens to uphold our Constitutional Republic, and to teach our children to do the same.  

Also, here is something for you to think about:  John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States of America said, “Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

 

Phase 3: The Solution: You!

Let me begin with a little story from the book Sowing and Reaping by D.L. Moody:

A father started for his office early one morning, after a light snowfall.  Turning, he saw his two-year old boy endeavoring to put his tiny feet in his own great footprints.  The little fellow shouted: “Go on, I’se comin’, Papa, I’se comin’ yight in ure tracks.”  He caught the boy in his arms and carried him to his mother, and started again for his office.  His habit had been to stop on the way at a bar for a glass of liquor. As he stood upon the threshold that morning he seemed to hear a sweet voice say: “Go on, I’se comin’, Papa, I’se comin’ yight in ure tracks.”  He stopped, he hesitated, he looked the future squarely in the face.  “I cannot afford to make any tracks I would be ashamed or sorry to have my boy walk in,” he said decidedly and walked away.

As I go on in my life, I have noticed more and more that I have to lead by example.  That’s a true leader. It’s not pointing fingers, giving orders, and having things your way.   Can I ask you a question?  Are there things in your life that you know you are ashamed to have your kids walk in?  Always remember, kids watch what you do, not what you say.  Every day of your life, you are sowing seeds behind you that will make or break someone who is watching you.  A man once said, “Things are caught, not taught.”  How true it is.  Titles or diplomas don’t make you a teacher, but walking in the knowledge that you have does.  Instead of practicing what you preach, why not preach what you practice?  The number one complaint that we hear from kids about most adults is hypocrisy.  Wouldn’t you feel the same way?  

Many adults have asked me, “Where do we go from here, or where do we start?”   When we can admit our mistakes, and own up to our responsibilities, we can then see that the children will follow.  You only have one shot at a kid sometimes, and you have to make it count because life is here one minute and gone the next. Do you want to live the rest of your life knowing that you could have done more for your children, leaving yourself with a lifetime of asking, “What if?”  Or do you want to see your life fulfilled in knowing that you did everything you possibly could to stand for the future of our country?  It’s up to you now.
