Would you sell me one of your eyes for $1 million? How about selling both for $15 million? Think for a moment; what would you do with the money? You could see the world! Not quite; you could sit at home in the blackness and blindness and count it all.
I’m sure no one in their right mind would consider selling his or her eyesight for any amount of money. Maybe you never really thought about how priceless your eyes are. They are the windows to your soul; the life that peeks through the shutters of your eyes.
If your eyes are without price, what must your soul be worth? Jesus said that your life is so valuable that you are to actually despise your eyes in comparison to the worth of your soul. He said that if your right eye offends you and causes you to sin, you are to pluck it out and cast it from you. He said it would be better for you to go to heaven without an eye than to go to hell with full sight. He said that the combined riches of this entire world are not worth losing your own soul. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul” (Mark 8:36)?
Of all the things you should put on your list or priorities, your eternal salvation (liberation from bondage) should be right at the top. The most important thing in this world is not your health, marriage, girlfriend, boyfriend, vocation, home, etc.—it is the salvation of your soul. These things are merely temporal, your salvation is eternal (see Matthew 5:28)!
